If you go to the gym regularly, then it pays to be prepared for every eventuality that you might encounter while strength training. Here are 4 items that you must keep in your gym bag if you want to be confident that nothing will interfere with your workouts.
1 – A First Aid Kit
A small, but well-stocked first-aid kit will come in handy if you cut yourself, or even sprain something. A first-aid kit doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and things like a triangular bandage, some plasters, tape, etc will always be useful. If you use something from the first aid kit, be sure to restock it ASAP so that you don’t find yourself missing essential stuff in an emergency.
2 – Hand Sanitizer
Gyms are communal places where people exercise and sweat a lot. Some people who come to the gym will be training or working out while they are unwell. The last thing you want is to get sick yourself. Take some hand sanitizer with you so that you can always clean your hands before you leave the gym, or before you stop off to grab a bite to eat. Washing your hands properly is, of course, a better option, but if you can’t do that then hand sanitizer is a good back-up.
3 – A Small Towel
Keep a small towel in your bag for wiping yourself down, and for wiping down equipment between sets. You may need to wipe down equipment that other people have been using, and it’s always polite to wipe your equipment when you’re done, so the next person to sit down on that machine or use that bench doesn’t have to deal with someone else’s sweat. Even if you don’t lift weights, it’s good to have a towel – you can sweat a lot doing yoga, for example, and being able to wipe off will help make the poses easier.
4 – Nail Clippers
Training with long nails is a recipe for disaster. The nails can get caught in clothing, scratch yourself when you’re gripping tightly in a deadlift, get caught on balls if you’re playing a sport, or scratch your training partners when you’re doing martial arts. Take a moment to cut your nails to protect yourself and anyone that you train with. Cut them so they have a rounded edge, then file them smooth.
Keep nail clippers in your bag so that you can lend them to others, and so that you can trim your nails quickly if you notice that they’re getting a little long.
There are other essentials that you might want to carry, things like kineseology tape, deodorant, wipes, spare kit, a gumshield, or other sport-specific items. What you carry will depend on the sport you usually do. Take a moment to think about what you usually need, and try to condense your kit to those essentials. Have a dedicated training bag so that you’re never stuck without gear.
5 – Electric Razor
This is an absolute must for me because I workout early in the morning at the gym before I go into work. So, I come to the gym in my workout clothes, workout and the shower up. I always keep my favorite braun series 7 790cc electric razor in my gym bag so I can shave when I need too. For those of you who are old school you can also keep your favorite head shaver as well. It comes down to a personal choice.
So, next time you are packing your gym bag, these are the 5 items I would keep in there so you are always ready to shower and great ready at a moments notice.
